The poems, essays, and iPhone notes join together in a gripping homage to pasts lived over and over. Kayla’s writing urges us all to challenge silence, defy quiet, and make noise against all our (alleged) better judgements. We join her journey through small towns, lineage, and the breaking as the collection moves us along to a beloved otherwise (a place of undeniable possibilities if I do say). The Grim Reaper’s Rifle, nor its author are concerned with conventions. Together they employ a different aim and encourage us all to leave behind our commitments to rules we never had a hand in writing. Kayla challenges us to choose and choose again. Kayla’s debut collection is an invitation to witness and to survive. She offers us an opportunity to be honest about life and liberation. She rejects prescriptions for a richer chance to imagine without bounds. No answers, no solutions, no remedy other than us, together, ready to consider the possibilities of living beyond silence at the mercy of a long gun.
